The central government plans to introduce water metro services in Patna as part of the National Waterway-1 (NW-1) initiative. This project includes 16 new community jetties, two Ro-Pax terminals, and a vessel repair hub, all aiming to leverage the Ganga for enhanced urban transport.
Union Ports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the move in Patna last week, emphasizing that water transport offers a clean, cost-effective alternative to busy roads and rails. The plan also includes developing a state-of-the-art ship repair and construction center in the city.
Modern Jetties and Smart Infrastructure
Officials plan 16 community jetties at key riverbank locations and two Ro-Pax terminals. They will also install Quick Pontoon Opening Mechanisms (QPOMs) at four sites to ensure smooth operations.
The initiative will empower the National Inland Navigation Institute (NINI) in Patna, upgrading it into a Centre of Excellence for training and research in inland waterways.
Boost to Cargo, Tourism, and Local Livelihoods
A joint task force will explore new navigation routes across 12 districts along the Ganga. This integration of water, road, and rail networks aims to revitalize local trade and tourism.
The project also extends to develop a potential multimodal terminal in Bhagalpur, enhancing logistics and people movement in the region.
