Mumbai-based transport startup JalVimana has placed an order for 11 Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil ferries, making it the largest single fleet of such vessels globally. The move signals Mumbai’s ambition to tap into its coastline for sustainable public transit and drastically reduce road congestion.

Hydrofoil Tech Promises Speed and Efficiency

These sleek ferries use computer-controlled hydrofoils that lift the hull above water, cutting drag and energy use by up to 80%. They operate almost silently and glide smoothly, even in rough waters. Each vessel can reach speeds around 30 knots, making them significantly faster than traditional ferries.

Routes to Slash Commute Times

JalVimana plans to deploy the ferries on heavily trafficked routes such as Gateway of India to Alibaug and Elephanta Island, where road travel can take over two hours. The hydrofoils are expected to reduce that journey to around 25–30 minutes. The company also aims to connect the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport with South Mumbai, potentially slashing a 90-minute drive to under 30 minutes.

Strategic Collaboration and National Ambitions

This fleet order resulted from a Sweden-India collaboration, announced during Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s recent Stockholm visit. JalVimana CEO Niraj Thakur and Candela CEO Gustav Hasselskog described the deal as a major leap for Mumbai’s transport network. Maharashtra’s Ports Minister Nitesh Rane and CM Devendra Fadnavis have expressed full support for deploying thousands of electric vessels along the coast.

A Sustainable Step for Urban Mobility

As Candela’s P-12 ferries debuted in Stockholm in late 2024, they proved zero-emission transit could cut commute times and boost comfort. Mumbai’s fleet promises similar benefits: cleaner air, quieter rides, and efficient coastal transport using underutilized waterways.

Conclusion:

Mumbai has taken a bold step toward eco-friendly commuting by ordering the largest fleet of electric hydrofoil ferries. With high-speed routes planned and sustainable technology at play, these “flying” boats promise to redefine urban transportation along the city’s iconic coastline.
