Mumbai’s newly rebuilt Carnac Bridge, spanning between Masjid Bunder and CSMT stations, is nearing completion. The bridge replaced the original structure dating back to 1866-67, which was demolished in November 2022 after a structural audit deemed it unsafe. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) completed major construction by June 10, including the RCC deck slab, asphalt, access roads, and the installation of street lights and signage.

Final Clearance Pending from Railways and Traffic Authorities

The bridge underwent load testing from June 13 to 15. The BMC has since requested inspections from Central Railways and Mumbai Traffic Police to secure final clearance. Officials anticipate opening the bridge within days, pending the issuance of No Objection Certificates (NOCs). BMC added that it will install six recovered heritage stones from the original bridge atop the new structure, preserving a link to its past.

Bridge Design Meets Modern Commuter Needs

Engineered as a 70-meter-long and 9.5-meter-wide steel superstructure, the bridge now includes four vehicular lanes, effectively doubling its earlier capacity. The new design also features modern signage and lighting to improve commuter safety and efficiency.

Wider Road Overbridge Programme in Progress

Alongside Carnac, BMC is working on other key infrastructure projects. The Bellasis flyover is expected to open by December 15, 2025, while the Sion flyover will be ready by May 31, 2026. Officials have confirmed that girders for both flyovers are now onsite, and teams anticipate no further delays.

Conclusion:

Final inspections and railway approval are the last steps before Mumbai commuters can utilize the much-awaited Carnac Bridge. Once operational, this bridge will significantly ease traffic flow from South Mumbai toward the Eastern Freeway and Trans Harbour Link, offering noticeable relief to daily travelers.
