The Gujarat government has decided to revive the long-delayed third ring road project around Ahmedabad. First proposed in 2006, the plan remained on hold for years due to legal and administrative delays. Now, state authorities aim to push the project forward, keeping in mind the city’s expanding boundaries and a broader plan for future events like the 2036 Olympics, for which Ahmedabad is preparing a possible bid.

The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA), Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), and the Urban Development Department will jointly manage the planning and land acquisition. Officials have confirmed that the work will proceed under more than 100 Town Planning Schemes, aiming to avoid the delays previously caused by revenue law-based land acquisition.

Aim to Decongest Existing Roads

The proposed third ring road will reduce pressure on the existing 132-feet Ring Road and the Sardar Patel Ring Road, which currently handle a large share of Ahmedabad’s daily traffic. It will offer an alternate route around the city, easing traffic flow and supporting future urban expansion.

Planners are reviewing the original 2006 alignment and will likely revise it to suit today’s development needs. They expect to release a detailed implementation plan by the end of next year.

Town Planning Model to Speed Up Work

Authorities are using the Town Planning (TP) model to manage land acquisition, road development, and supporting infrastructure. This method will allow the government to acquire land efficiently and build planned infrastructure without lengthy court delays. Officials believe this approach will help fast-track the third ring road project and integrate it with upcoming urban infrastructure initiatives across the region.
