Goa’s Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, announced that the state government will expand its Smart City mission to include Mapusa, Vasco, and Margao. These towns will follow Panaji, which has already benefited from modern infrastructure under the AMRUT scheme.

Sawant made the announcement at a Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry meeting. He stated that officials now plan to push smart upgrades in these three towns in the next phase, emphasizing the initiative falls under the Central government’s AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) scheme. He also urged businesses to join efforts to deliver a “Green Goa, Clean Goa,” blending digital and ecological goals.

AMRUT Scheme to Boost Urban Infrastructure

Under AMRUT, the government will improve water supply, sewage systems, transport, green spaces, and digital governance across these towns. Mapusa and Vasco serve as commercial and port hubs, while Margao acts as the cultural and medical center for South Goa. Targeted upgrades will serve both local residents and tourists. They aim to improve street lighting, footpaths, and civic services. The move addresses growing urban demands as Goa rapidly develops.

Connectivity and Private Sector Role Highlighted

Sawant noted that Panaji’s project built digital and physical links. He now seeks similar expansion in these towns, stating that fiber optic networks will span Goa within two years. Alongside, he pressed private industry to help fund and execute projects, highlighting the importance of public-private partnerships.

He stressed that smart cities require joint action. He called on Goa’s industry leaders to assist with manufacturing and waste management initiatives, especially in the industrial zones.

Next Steps and Expected Impact

Officials expect these towns to enter the planning stage within the coming months. They will prepare detailed project reports, drawing on lessons from Panaji’s rollout under AMRUT. The government intends to align smart upgrades with national targets like “Viksit Bharat 2047” and “Viksit Goa 2037.”

Residents and businesses should soon notice upgrades in basic services, public spaces, connectivity, and governance. These improvements aim to raise urban living standards, support economic growth, and ease tourism pressure, all while keeping environmental goals in focus.
