Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a significant surge in railway funding for West Bengal, citing an increase from approximately ₹3,000 crore during the 2009-14 period to nearly ₹14,000 crore now. This funding will support station modernization, track upgrades, and new lines under the national PM Gati Shakti framework. Budget allocations include funds for the New Jalpaiguri-Kolkata corridor and plans to make the “Chicken’s Neck” section a four-line network.
Purulia-Bankura-Howrah MEMU Service Introduced
Vaishnaw flagged off a new MEMU service linking Purulia, Bankura, Masagram, and Howrah. The train runs on a revived route through Masagram at a fare of ₹60. It aims to ease travel for daily commuters, students, and traders across Purulia, Bankura, Hooghly, and Howrah districts. This launch underscores the ministry’s effort to improve rural and regional rail access.
101 Stations to Receive Upgrades Under Amrit Bharat Scheme
Vaishnaw noted that 101 stations across West Bengal will be upgraded under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. These upgrades include better amenities, improved passenger experience, and smoother train operations.
Corridor Expansion and Multi-Modal Strategy
Beyond station upgrades, official documents mention further plans. These include adding new lines and cargo terminals, and linking the Sevoke-Siliguri-New Mal section to main corridors. Vaishnaw called for state cooperation to address land acquisition and traffic issues. He urged both central and state agencies to align efforts for seamless project delivery and faster rail expansion.
